Technically, I should have uploaded this a few hours ago but I got got distracted watching Hannibal cast interviews. Fuck you, Hugh Dancy, and your adorable accent.
Superheroes. I don't know why we like Superheroes so much. They are the most ridiculous fictional concept ever (well, discounting monsters and shit). Infact, most superheroes universes contain lots of illogical gaps.
A) With most superheroes, the concept of celebrity only pays a minor role. Which, is really stupid when you think about it. A superhero would definitely be a celebrity. If a kitten goes viral on the internet, the entire population will know about it. If someone has the ability to fly or throw fireballs from their hands - EVERYONE would know about it. Instead, Superheroes seem to only be mildly well known among their local community, or if they are known by the masses - the president always wants them on hand and doesn't seem to want to know who their true identity is. Really? Like the president would just trust whoever the hell they are? So long as the job gets done, right?
B) Outfits. Most outfits just seem impractical, in all honesty. Batman must be lugging around pounds with his super bulky and black suit, yet he never seems to even have a bead of sweat on his brow. Wouldn't super-skin-tight spidey get sore with the suit rubbing too much on his skin? Even with practicality issues, the aesthetics are mostly ridiculous. The Captain America mask speaks for it's self.
C) The improbable nature. Super heroes probably won't happen. (And if they do, I doubt they'll be wearing lycra suits) We know this nature. We are conscious of it when we enter the cinema or pick up a comic.
And yet, we like this fictional idea so much.
And that's hitting the nail on the head - fiction. We love the fiction. The adventure, the excitement, the escapism. We love getting ourselves lost in the idea of superheroes. When you watch a superhero movie, or read a superhero comic, it presents you with a universe where colossal, disastrous problems arise - but are then solved in a ridiculous, flamboyant way.
Everything feels easier in a superhero world. Which, consequently, makes everything in your world feel easier. While I watching The Avengers last year, I distinctly remember all my thoughts and problems drift away from me, all I focused on was the story. I watched these group of heroes calculate and plot and felt safe in doing so. I didn't have to focus on my own life, just focus on being in the cinema, among a community all sharing the same exhilaration and excitement as me, all of us trusting that the superhero world is a world where you can get lost in.
So our love for it stems from our trust for it. The way it allows us to sit back and marvel (pardon the pun) in the safety of it all - knowing we will witness heroism, knowing we will see justice, action, and adventure. We trust the idea of superheroes so much - even though it's ridiculous - because it's a trusting world.
If I was a superhero (something which I often debate), I think the power I am most likely to have is Astral Projection. This being due to my tendency to day dream a lot. I picture myself in several different situations whenever I drop off focus and it would tame to my wanderlust, I guess.
I also think it would suit my multi-tasking personality. I like to try keep myself productive by doing multiple things at once, that way I feel most accomplished. The powers I would also personally like to have are, Telekinesis & Levitation. Telekinesis purely because, duh, doesn't everyone want that? Levitation because I like the idea of defying gravity (if you will) but think the idea of having the ability of flight is too daunting and would have too much of a phsycial impact on my body. Whereas with levitation, you can still lift yourselves to great heights - but it's more controlled. Also, when you're being a Super Certified Superhero and you're throwing out some kickass fight moves on your villains, levitation makes it all the more badass
As for my outfit, I would dress head to toe in pastels. I would want big ass lace-up-to-your-knees boots, pigtails, and cross bow and arrows as my weapon of choice. All the best characters are into archery. My name would have to be Owls, obviously. Growls to my enemies, though.
